Our Vision

A Gift Store with Heart

Born from a love of the Oakdale Morning Market, The Shoppe on 3rd Avenue was created by Lisa Kjeldgaard and Mindy VanTil in September of 2024 to give local makers and artisans a permanent home for their products - a place where market visitors could find their favorite products year-round.

While the market experience can't be replicated (and was never our intention) we focused on building a vibrant, dynamic space where the community can shop local every day of the week.

The 410-square-foot shop is packed with personality and purpose. From handcrafted cutting boards to small-batch honey, herbal tinctures to hand-sewn aprons, each product tells a story. We're proud to feature goods from Oakdale and the surrounding counties, with a commitment to supporting local first.

In November 2025, Mindy became the sole owner of The Shoppe. She is committed to carrying forward the original vision with the same passion and commitment that inspired its creation, committed to curating a space that both inspires and warms the heart.

While not everything in the store is locally made (we're still searching for a basket weaver!), every item is thoughtfully selected to create a cohesive, exciting shopping experience for our visitors.

We balance local treasures with complementary products to ensure our shelves are always full of discovery.

Local First

Our Commitment in Practice

Our inventory evolves as our community of makers grows, and while we carry items that aren't always local, we actively seek opportunities to replace them with products made right here in our region. As an example, wool dryer balls were on our list of products we wanted to carry in The Shoppe to compliment our home care items. Thankfully, we hadn't made a purchase yet. Shortly after our opening, a customer came in and learned about our vision and commitment to local makers. She shared that she owns an alpaca farm right here in Oakdale and makes dryer balls from alpaca fiber - each set featuring the name of the donating alpaca (the cutest touch!). We immediately removed dryer balls from our shopping list and placed an order with her instead.

Several orders later, those alpaca dryer balls remain one of our favorite products in the store.

It's stories like this that we look forward to creating year after year - serendipitous connections that strengthen our local network and fill our shelves with truly special finds.

“It isn’t enough just looking for the quality in the products we buy, we must ensure that there is quality in the lives of the people who make them.” - Orsola De Castro

The Stories
Behind the Products

That jar of honey? It comes from a third-generation beekeeper who tends hives in the Sierra foothills. The hand-sewn apron? Crafted by a mother of three who learned to sew from her grandmother. The cutting board? Made by a woodworker who sees beauty in every grain of reclaimed oak.

We believe the stories behind the products matter just as much as the products themselves.

Throughout The Shoppe, you’ll see vendor “Story Cards” that introduce you to the makers, highlight what inspires them, and share the passion behind their work.

When you shop here, you're not just buying a product. You're connecting with the person who poured their skill, passion, and dreams into creating it. You're supporting a local family, celebrating a cherished tradition, and becoming part of a larger story - one that weaves together our entire community.

“Behind every small business, there’s a story worth knowing.”

We're also working toward a future where every product in The Shoppe is clearly labeled with origin markers: Made in Oakdale, Made in Stanislaus County, Made in Tuolumne County, Made in Calaveras County, Made in San Joaquin County, Made in California, & Made in the USA.

Because knowing where your products come from matters.

And supporting local matters even more.
